These trails have nothing to do with solar radiation management, and in fact there's one proposed form of SRM called Cirrus Stripping to actively remove persistent contrails because they contribute to climate change.

Never heard of cirrus stripping before, where can I learn more about it? And how can you say definitively that the trails have nothing to do with SRM?

The main areas of geoengineering being researched are Stratospheric Aerosol Injection, Cirrus Stripping, and Maritime Cloud Brightening. SAI takes place in the Stratosphere from about 80,000 feet up to 100 miles. It will require either special tanker aircraft or rockets or balloons to get the aerosols up there. And yes, the substances being considered include aluminium, barium, and sulphides. Personally I think this is insanity. They won't know if it works without doing it, and if it goes wrong there's no going back. Maritime Cloud Brightening uses ships with massive water pumps to blast seawater into the lower atmosphere to make clouds which reflect the sun's rays. And Cirrus Stripping DOES take place at airliner altitude. The idea is to remove both the natural cirrus clouds AND the haze from the persistent contrails as it traps heat and increases global warming.

Okay, so if I'm understanding this correctly, the contrails that spread out and cover the sky in a gray haze are bad because they trap heat and increase global warming. But wouldn't they also reflect light as well? That would be a good thing, according to the goals of SRM, right?

There are climate scientists arguing both ways. The cirrus layer cuts down on direct sunlight reaching the ground during the day, but then traps the infra red heat that would normally be radiated out into space at night. So the effect is dimmer days and warmer nights. Whether that leads to a net increase or decrease in global temperatures remains to be seen. Noticed it yesterday in Kansas. Clear all morning, but when I step outside for a late lunch I see probably 6-8 planes spraying trails, and by that time the blue sky was accented with widening white streaks.

It's aviation pollution which we are made to believe is just ice.

The real "they're spraying us!!" conspiracy can be found in your local vector control districts mosquito spraying regimen, where they spray pesticides from airplanes over populated cities.

While I don't know exactly what chemtrails are, geoengineering is real and alive and well. It seems like people equate chemtrails with geoengineering and are labeled "conspiracy nuts" when bringing it up. You can search .gov sites for legislation and bill introduction and easily find geoengineering mentioned.

That's because geoengineering is a broad term covering many different areas of climate control, from low level cloud busting to global Stratospheric aerosol dispersal. But none of it involves spraying white clouds out of airliners. Those contrails really are just massive plumes of ice crystals.

No. It's actually jet fuel exhaust particles, and the ice forms around the particles in a process called nucleation. Jet fuel exhaust is full of all kinds of stuff.

I do understand nucleation, also the processes of sublimation and deposition which dictate whether a contrail disappears or persists and grows to contain thousands of tons of ice in every mile.

Yes they are. I took this photo in England last year and every new contrail showed up on flightradar. Of course, most of the contrails had been up there for hours so the planes were long gone.

A problem many observers in the US have is that for security reasons the display is delayed by five minutes. So what they see overhead bears little relation to what's on screen. I think this is the reason behind so many "It's not on Flightradar" claims.
