If I remember correctly Sinterklaas was the inspiration for Santaclaus but they are not the same. The folklore of Sinterklaas predates that of Santaclaus. The origins lie in the Bisschop of Myra, who was called Sint-Nicolaas, who lived in the year 300. Santaclaus was first mentioned in 1821, Sinterklaas in the Middle Ages. Santaclaus also uses traditions from the british Father Christmas and the Germanic winterfestival Yule.
There's the story that Christmas is a mushroom celebration. In the far north there's a mushroom called Amanita Muscaria and it looks like the Super Mario mushroom -red and white like Santa - and it's psychedelic. The mushrooms typically grow in the shade beneath evergreens. Mushrooms are dried out before consumption, and may have been hung from chimneys to do so, or even from the trees themselves. Psychonauts often describe seeing elves (or elf like things) on high doses of psychedelics. Also, most of the active ingredient gets filtered through your urine (which apparently means drinking your pee during/after a trip will blast you to pluto) and reindeer have been known to seek it out after human consumption.
