Saw something puzzling on an old Mars post. Space conspiracies aren't my wheel house; can someone more knowledgeable please advise?

So I saw a thoughtful post the other day, decided to check the user's history, and stumbled upon a post from a few months ago.

https://www.reddit.com/r/conspiracy/comments/5vobc8/check_this_statue_from_egypt_right_nope_this_is/?st=J3N3B5WE&sh=45e383fb

The post is straightforward, discussing what appears to be a statue on a cliff face on Mars. Regardless of how you feel about that, it's a beautiful picture of Mars

https://www.nasa.gov/images/content/207023main_vincent-20071220.jpg

Someone in the comments then noted that there appears to be two of these statues

https://m.imgur.com/NDVvmX3

My first instincts were to disregard the supposed statues, as it's not completely clear that's what it is ... But then I noticed something.

Above the "statue" and to the left, there appears to be a walkway going diagonally up along the cliff face. The walkway turns at a 90 degree angle and cuts up into theup the cliff face, making a squared corridor.

I then zoomed in for a closer look, and there is what appears to be several edited pixels all along this path. I'm not at all knowledgeable in photography or photo editing, but it jumped out at me as looking like it was spot edited. Is there another explanation for these fuzzy pixels? Is this several images compiled together? If so, why are there dots of fuzziness focused on this particular area?

The "statue" in question is just right of center in the image. Note the slanted path above it to the left, and the turn the path takes turning 90 degrees to the right and up and into the cliff face.

I'm not seeing the faces but you are right about the couple weird pixel spots in the corridor.

Unfortunately I don't know jack about editing so.

Filing this under suspicious and interesting.

Wasn't sure if it was paraedolia, or something real myself. The corridor made me go from total skepticism to several minutes of head scratching. Now, I'm hoping someone else picks it up and runs with it

You were correct with your first thought, this is a prime example of paraedolia messing with you.

Yeah, I didn't agree with the face, but the path is what made me post this

I feel like there's other rocks there that could pass as the "seeing face where there isn't", but nothing else really does besides the alleged statue.

Just one case of seeing a face where there isn't, where there are lots of angles that could be mistaken for one.

Idk, maybe I'm just wishful thinking.

Who really knows. Bet you had more fun here than in a partisan post though; and if nothing else there's a gorgeous, high-resolution photograph of the Martian surface.

Definitely weird, especially since both "statues" are about the same height off of the ground.

As for the pixels, there's quite a few places in that photo with the same marks so i'm not sure what's going on there.

Just thought it was strange they seem to be wider and darker than other pixelations I saw in the image. Like I said, I'm totally out of my element, but find this stuff fascinating.

I agree, ever since i saw the interview with that woman like 10+ years ago. She claimed to work at NASA and said her "job" was to do nothing but photoshop UFOs out of images. I'll post the link here if i can find it again.

Use the save function

I try, but I never end up going back to my saves until way later. If I comment, I'll see it the next time I check out my karma

Not seen this before, but convenient land slide to cover up an entrance?

Geologists here, that 'path' you are talking about simply looks like fractures in the rock, as you can see the 'path' follows a similar orientation to many other fractures within the same formation. It is perfectly expected that they would form near perpendicular to each other as well. Nothing man made required, that's simply how rocks tend to behave given certain stress orientations.

As someone who desperately wants to find neat stuff like this, I'm with you. But I don't see anything usual in this image.

It is worth considering that if this were real, it would have to be very very very recent.

Thanks! This is exactly the answer I was hoping for

As far as I know, 45 degrees is not perpendicular.

This guy is not a geologist of he's going to lie about basic geometry.

It's at an approximate 45 degree angle, and the path turns, creating a 90 degree angle between the two perpendicular paths. The two are separate observations from the way I read it.

Also heads up, your comment posted 4 times somehow. Happens to me if I'm on mobile with bad service.

Oh, I read he was implying the features are perpendicular to the banding of the rock face (i.e. "similar orientation to many other fractures within the same formation").

Cool, just making sure I didn't miss something

Don't bother editing your post calling me a liar based on your flawed interpretation though.

No worries, he just misunderstood and I clarified

Check out my zoomed in version. What do you make of the squares that appear to be blurring out what is behind them?

...he's a geologist, not a professional photo editor. :(

Can I ask you a question? Since there's not water on Mars, what else may have created this canyon? TIA!

It's important to understand that while there is not currently liquid water in the surface, but there was in the past. As well, there absolutely is water in the subsurface (in various forms) and that depending on where you are on the planet surface erosion is happening today .

So I don't know specifically, and it would take a detailed study to even come up with a reasonable hypothesis, but I would say that erosion is possible through wind as well as water, and the fracturing that is clearly occuring can happen simply due to stress.

Kinda reminds me of stuff like this:

I'm not seeing anything other than a cliff face.

Can you upload a different picture that better highlights what you think looks like statues? Even the red arrows, to my eye, seem like they are just pointing at random parts of a cliff face. I'm sorry, I just don't see anything but rocks?

If you look to the right and up from the arrow on the right, you'll note an approximately 45 degree downward slope. Following the line of the slope, the "face" is just below and to the right. Elongated chin and skull. I believed this to be the result of paraedolia at first. Still undecided.

On the original image, it's in the center, all the way on the right side of the cliff. I don't have a clearer image, as these were the only ones included in the original post.

I'm sorry, I really just don't see anything like what you are describing... =(

No worries, I wish I had a better image to work with but I'm on mobile and can't edit

Hello there. I have zoomed in on the anomalies and highlighted them with bright colorful arrows. :)

Take a look: http://imgur.com/EXjvFJH

wow, that's it?

how disappointing....

That's it? I think the fact that we are looking at obvious image manipulation is disappointing.

And why exactly do you think it's obvious? I see no evidence of tampering or manipulation whatsoever.

I'm sorry then. I don't think I'll be able to convince you.

So you are saying you have no actual evidence, it just "seems" like it's been tampered with? Like just a gut feeling or something?

Last reply from me. Look at where the green arrows are pointing to. There are square shapes that are blurred out. There is an unnatural seam around these squares that to me, shows that they were drawn on with Photoshop or similar. They are not natural. If you can't see that, then I'm really sorry. I can lead you to the water, but you must drink.

You are talking about those blurry looking squares?

Those are just some kind of digital artifact. If you look around that picture, they are all over the place.

If you looked at other black and white photos of very high resolution, and then zoomed way it, you would see similar artifacts.

Don't know why you got down voted for this particular comment. You're just positing that these images typically come with these digital artifacts. Do you have any links you could provide? This post is turning out to be more fun than I anticipated

Don't know why you got down voted for this particular comment.

People don't like to be wrong about things they really really really believe in, especially if it's something they "saw with their own eyes."

All you have to do is zoom into that picture and just look around, you'll notice the same "blurry squares" in random places all around the image.

Makes sense. Can you provide instances of it happening in other NASA images though?

So do you actually have proof of these digital artifacts being present in other images or were you just being deliberately confrontational?

lmfao, downvote and no reply.

typical.

You don't have the video of you behind the persons shoulder editing the photo so you don't have proof is what I'm getting from the other guy.

I'm sure there's other proof yeah I'm mostly being sarcastic, but cmon it's not hard to acknowledge it looks a little weird there.

But "I'm sorry man idk what you're talking about, looks like any other rock!"?

Idk. It's all speculation unfortunately.

I think he just likes to waste people's time.

Sure, we dont definitively know what it is, but it sure does resemble a statue of a pharaoh to me...

http://www.metmuseum.org/toah/images/hb/hb_26.7.1451.jpg

There are three small objects in the corridor which have been purposely obfuscated.

They clearly missed the statues. Excellent find.

I wasn't sure if it was deliberate obfuscation or if it was a product of the way the Rover compiles images, hence the point of the post. The statues are enormous compared to those relatively tiny pixels however, and that leads me to wonder how they could have missed that.

Not image artefacts that's for sure. There's no stiching points etc. The blurred out areas are perfectly square and perfectly centered on each of the three objects.

I wonder what they were.

I thought maybe sconces or path markers of some sort. Imagination is fun, I just don't know if I'm pushing the envelope here or not

Could be more statue heads etc. that were more visible to the censors because they contrasted with the sand as opposed to blending in with the rock.

Wouldn't be the first evidence of stone workings on mars.

Really? Do you have links? Started out indifferent but this is pretty cool stuff

It's definitely been tinkered with. Here's some finds: * the foto forensics link: http://fotoforensics.com/analysis.php?id=0294b85cd8141f06781945ae0a30d016a18f35e3.7058545&fmt=ela * foto forensics and area closeup comparison: http://i.imgur.com/SieS7FH.gif * area closeup and increased contrast: http://i.imgur.com/B8athbb.gif

Wow that's awesome! I knew it was possible to see edits, just didn't know how to go about making it happen. Thank you kindly

So would the reason for all the edits on the bottom to be to reduce glare from that rock close to the Rover?

Something looks obviously blurred out to me. What do you think? I've highlighted it with arrows. Green to the blurred squares and yellow to the alleged statue.

http://imgur.com/gallery/gnBkt

Those are the exact points that led to this post. I seriously don't know, but it's very interesting

Thank you for doing this, I was having trouble seeing exactly what OP was talking about. Now it's staring me right in the face! Looks like an intentional obfuscation to me.

Glad I could contribute.

Can't edit, but know you're the man

Anything we get from them could be/is heavily doctored to begin with. If there was anything juicy it would definitely have been edited out.

Wish I could get this closer to the top

Haha thanks, I feel the same way about your OP. I couldn't agree more that this shit is absolutely fascinating to me.

I'm pretty sure it's a photo artifact, but it does look really weird.

No problem. I need to practice anyway.

We need more people like you

I’ve been checking out this website since early 2000, it’s what got me into questioning everything.

I just wanted to share this awesome resource on Mars.

Years ago, I attempted to bring up some topics regarding water and other clear evidence of life but got harassed pretty badly, called a nut, etc.

Now that we are seeing official releases of the same information – I feel going back to the articles this site makes, would generate more discussion and perhaps new revelations on the secrets of mars.

I'll definitely give this a read tomorrow! That's awesome, thanks for sharing with us

I meant to link the categories, but it's easy to find. Loads of info starting 2000ish and he stopped updating end of 2014.
