What better way to distract and force the story to die down from their perspective. The media will spin it as a crazed loon and will report what NYT and Alefantis has said from the beginning. That this is some crazed alt right conspiracy theory with no basis in fact.

The police arrested the guy and thus the story is focused on the gunman and not Alefantis and Comet Ping Pong. They can point out that NYT and now police have "vindicated" them.

Disgusting if true, but seems par for the course.
