  • USA workforce eligible.......243 million (census est. 16 and over)

  • USA workforce actual..........156 million (census est.)

  • USA high school students........9 million (estimate)

  • USA 4 yr college college.......21 million (estimate)

  • Total students.........................30 million ( 9M + 21 M )

  • USA living in poverty.............47 million (sidenote- not used in calc)

  • Est. Lost jobs obamacare........_2 milllion (sidenote- from the CBO)

  • Illegals in USA........................11 million (sidenote- estimate)

  • Seniors , Disabled, etc = 318 M - 243 M = 75 M (sidenote- not in the calculation)

  • Students = 9 M + 12 M = 30 M............................(sidenote- not in the calculation)

  • Total Not in Calculation = 30 M + 75 M = 105 M

  • Not in the workforce = eligible - actual = 243 M - 156 M = 87 M

  • Actual unemployed = 87M - 30 M = 57 M

  • Actual workforce = 156 M

  • Actual unemployment rate = ( 57 M divided by 156 M ) multiply by 100 = 36.5 %

*Does DOL count those who do NOT get unemployment benefits through the 50 states + D.C. ? NO!

*Note this calculation does not include 11 million illegals (or 34 million ?).

That post is glorious! I've tried to tell this to my friends and family, but I fail at communicating the size of the chasm. No one seems to fathom how bad they are getting fucked.

I do have a little problem with your math but agree it's not 5.3%

first look at the U-6 That's a commonly accepted measure.

The other option is to use the workforce participation rate .

This give you a close number to what you came up with but with more stable math. (This way to calculate comes up with 37.4%)

Even with U-6, people who have been unemployed for more than a year are not counted, for having fallen out of "labor participation". Which is ironic because during the Great Recession unemployment benefits were extended to 100 weeks, meaning one could receive unemployment benefits without counting toward even U-6.
