Where does Infowars get their funding from?
0 2015-05-26 by overcomebyfumes
Hi! New here to /r/conspiracy . I'm not a believer in any particular conspiracy theory, but I do like to keep track of what conspiracy theorists are discussing.
As part of that "keeping track" I do check in on the Infowars site every so often. Over time I have noticed that they link to "RT" (Russian Times, a known Russian propaganda outfit) an awful lot, and that their international news has a markedly pro-Russian slant. This was painfully obvious during the Ukrainian crisis a while back.
Is Infowars part of a Russian propaganda machine? Do they get funding from Russia? I don't understand why they would have so much pro-Russia material otherwise.
It alarms me because so much of the material on Infowars gradually makes it's way out into other right wing news sources.
Thanks!
EDIT: Did a quick Google search. His radio show is syndicated by Genesis Communication, which was founded in 1998 by Midas Resources - "a vendor of gold and silver coins". I'm going to look deep into that particular angle.
Estimates of Alex Jones' net worth and income seem to vary wildly. I'm seeing $1.5 million/year from FORBES, to $2.7 to "potentially $10 million" a year from SALON.
yeepers.

Snake oil sales to fearful sheep is a short answer.

I'd be really curious to see how much one can make doing that. I'm assuming that there's no published financial report for the show or the website. Is there any way to find out how much Alex Jones makes in a year?

It's more than you'd think. I mean, watch discovery science channel. You'll see ads for "preppers", particularly "food ready kits". It's amazing.

Sigh....🙇 Fear sells.
2 DigitalAllDay 2015-05-26
Based off of his website public traffic data, I would estimate that he easily earns 2 million a year from the website advertising alone. His radio syndication deal adds to the pot. I'm sure his net worth is closer to Salon's estimate. Fear = money

Why would the DoD be funding all that pro-Russian bullsh*t, not to mention all the 9/11 Truthering?
EDIT: No offense meant to believers in non-mainstream 9/11 narratives. I just meant that it seems to me that it would not be in the DoD's interest to promote such narratives. (Still learning the ropes around here.)

Look at how often rt links are posted on this board. If you look at my comment history you can see I got down voted for simply pointing out the irony of posting an RT link bashing Monsanto.

Because they're trying to associate reality (what you call "bullsh*t" and "truthering") with an insane-yelling, red-faced, snake-oil salesman.
But you know that. You're only doing your job, after all.
0 overcomebyfumes 2015-05-26
Ahhhhhh... sneaky.
2 Rhabdomere 2015-05-26
This is LetsHackReality's way of accusing you of being a paid shill.
He does that to people very frequently. I'll tell you more about it on lunch break, for now just give a heads up to Jim.
2 overcomebyfumes 2015-05-26
I wish I was paid. I'm just genuinely curious how no-one seems to notice or mention that, for someone supposed to be a "patriot", Alex Jones' website is remarkably pro-Russian.
2 Rhabdomere 2015-05-26
If anyone's being paid in this thread it's probably LetsHackReality. Lucky bastard.
I don't pay much attention to AJ. It could be that he is pro-Russian out of a reactionary contrarianism (like a lot of Putin fans around here) or as a kind of "counterbalance" to the very anti-Russia propaganda which is common in the MSM. Maybe as he's become more popular over the years he's started to get "reimbursed" for it. Who knows?

I would say it s a floating source. Back in the 90s, they were vary much a right wing job because of anti Clinton sentiments but they we also very civil liberties which gave them a lefty at times feel at times. Then when W was in office, well just about anything Bush said was fair game so it seemed a little left of center at times while still being very much to the right or was anti bush without coming off as 'kill the Christians' and still having a government is bad message. Now with Obama, it seemed to have moved into the idea that a ruling elite has finally embraced main stream rap music, so government is still pretty bad and whatever they embrace is probably the opposite of what we want as a nation. So if the US and the EU says we are worried about the Ukraine, Alex Jones will instantly assume the opposite. Any funding they might get would most likely be after the fact.
I mean, for fuck sakes man....he's not Rush Limbaugh
0 overcomebyfumes 2015-05-26
Are you saying sir, for the record, that Rush Limbaugh gets his funding from the Russian government? LOL
2 Downstrike 2015-05-26
no, but not because he doesn't. Its because I fear for my families safety. If it is any consolation, I have the same fear of Rachel Meadows. In retrospect being a 3rd party guy is a dangerous choice.

If infowars is part of some propaganda machine, it is more likely controlled dissent rather than Russian affiliated. The only reason Russian news makes it to r/conspiracy so often is because many of the conspiracies circulated here are perpetrated by the US government or those in control of it, so the Russian media would naturally try and expose that - or stir the anti-US sentiment. Russian sources are likely plenty of both, exposing US corruption and/or adding fuel to false conspiracies. Both could be viewed as propaganda, as their intent either way is anti-US.
Edit: infowars is viewed by some as controlled dissent because of their exclusion of Israel relating to popular conspiracies. That and having a spokesman who seems incapable of speech without an artery popping tirade, that many view as a means to discredit and misdirect.

While I don't know the accounting going on behind the scenes, I'd imagine that the majority of their funding comes from people like myself who purchase products from their store.
I'm not into the Tangy Tangerine, Super Male Vitality, or any other of the supplements they've just come out with, but I have purchased the Survival Seed Vault, The WakeUp America Coffee, and the water filtration units from them before.
They link to a wide variety of sites, which include RT. Just because RT is based in Russia, doesn't mean that they don't occasionally have some decent news stories there.

Its quite interesting the amount of downvotes you get on here for talking bad about the Russians. Its made me question the legitimacy of users on this subreddit.

Why are you talking bad about the Russians?
Where would one get unbiased news about any of these entities?
They wanted Nuclear Disarmament.

You realize things have changed a bit since 1963. Just a bit.

Are you from Ukraine? I'm not, and as such , I am an outsider looking in.
Both a former professor & local neighbor said it is impossible to trust any source with regards to this struggle.(Both Ukranians)
Before one formulates opinion & strategy, should we not completely understand the factors & faculties in play?
Which news source have you relied upon for an unbiased summary of reality in the region?
0 SanDiegoPics 2015-05-26
So your source is a neighbor and a former professor?
0 Mae-Brussell-Hustler 2015-05-26
My source for who to trust with respect to honest, unbiased news were two Ukrainian citizens.
They said Pravda, RT , KyivPost , UNIAN Moscow Times & western news sources all confuse / obfuscate the issues, all are funded or advance special interests.
And , you didn't direct me to the sources I should trust. Would you kindly do that?
0 SanDiegoPics 2015-05-26
My source, it's called a map. Crimea is no longer in Ukraine.

Texas is no longer Mexico...

What is a pro Russian apologist & how does it compare to a Pro American apologist.
What are they apologizing for; Holodomor ?

Lets take a second. What could Russia possibly be apologizing for?

I'm being completely honest. I don't support Nation states willingly or blindly.
It's a genuine inquiry.
I am American & I prefer Bourbon.
Are both of our countries not controlled / dominated by intelligence agencies & military apparatus?
0 SanDiegoPics 2015-05-26
Well I'm glad we can find some common ground. Bourbon is quite tasty.
1 Mae-Brussell-Hustler 2015-05-26
Unlike many people on here, I prefer respectful, gentlemanly discussions.
My knowledge on Russian / Caucuses , Eurasian History is limited , I will readily admit.
My gut senses that these border skirmishes & nation state territorial battles are a distraction from a larger issue; namely the subversion of Democracy / Representative Governments.
